Location, Location, Location!: The Town of Essex



The town of Essex is comprised of 4 areas: Essex Centre, Harrow, Colchester and McGregor, which all have great, unique qualities, including beautiful wineries, parks and recreation centres! Let’s discover what makes the town of Essex so appealing to it’s residents!


Essex has some of the most fertile agricultural land in Windsor/Essex County. You can visit the Oxley Estate Wineries (#1 Restaurant on Trip Advisor), Colio Estate Winery, Sprucewood Shores, Viewpointe Estate Winery, located in the Town of Essex! All are reputable wineries that offer tours, and tastings. Or you could take a stop by Serenity Lavender Farm in Harrow that offers many Lavender based products. Check out the Fruit Wagon while you’re in town: a family farm that produces and sells seasonal fruits and vegetables May through November.


Thinking of taking the family for a day out? John R. Park Homestead located in Harrow offers events that take everyone back to the 1850s, including “corn husk crafts, cider and sausage making, seed saving and more. Meet the horses that made harvest possible 200 years ago! Enjoy the parade of breeds and a BBQ lunch.” (erca.ca/jrph/) From there, you could make your way to the Canadian Transportation Museum & Heritage Village. The Museum displays methods of transportation from the 1850s to 1990s, including a horse drawn hearse, firetrucks, and Ford Model T’s. Heritage village includes buildings from the 1700s to 1920s. The general store located in the village is said to be from the 1840s! The Canadian conservationist, Jack Miner’s home is one the home is on display at Heritage Village, built in 1889.


Looking for something a little more active to do with the family? There’s the Essex Sports Complex that has a NHL sized Rink and Practice Pad, and Walking Track! The Essex Recreation Complex has a lap pool, Tarzan rope (for your kids, or your inner-kid 😉 ), leisure pool and waterslide. Harrow and Colchester South Arena has a single pad arena, and you could also take a look at the Essex Sports Park, the Essex Soccer fields & skate park on Fairview Ave. West, and the Harrow Soccer Complex and Tennis Courts.

After a big day of exploring, everyone’s probably going to be hungry! Take a stop by Dairy Freez on your way home, a drive-in restaurant offering ice cream and typical “diner” foods. (Try the chololate dipped cone with Skor! Yumm 🙂 ) Or you could try D.o.C.K 21, an American-style restaurant that’s kid friendly! Naples Pizza and Capri Pizza are also a good places to look for family friendly dinners!

    Essex is wonderful. I love that is in close proximity to everything you could need but it still maintains that homey small town feel.
